MINDEN, Nev. — More than 30 homeowners in the Johnson Lane area have filed a lawsuit against Douglas County, claiming the County caused harm to their properties when debris and water from the flooding of the 2014 and 2015 rushed through the area.
Eight years, dozens of lawyers and hundreds of thousands of documents later, more than 200 northern Nevada Fernley flood victims are finally going to be paid for damages suffered when a century-old irrigation canal burst and sent a wall of water into their homes in 2008.

A lawsuit filed in Washoe County alleges the state of Nevada failed to follow its own law ranking businesses for medical marijuana dispensary licenses.
The plaintiff in the complaint, Washoe Dispensary, LLC., argues the state’s ranking system awarded two licenses to Tryke Companies Reno LLC in Sparks and unincorporated Washoe County, which breaks the Nevada law limiting one business no more than 10 percent of the licenses in any jurisdiction.

A local business group has filed a lawsuit against the State of Nevada and Washoe County for allegedly failing to comply with state law concerning medical marijuana dispensaries.
Washoe Dispensary LLC filed the complaint in the Second Judicial Court of Washoe County. The group says it was ranked 6th out of 11 applicants for a license to operate a dispensary in unincorporated Washoe County.
After a 14-day trial, a jury has found that the Truckee Carson Irrigation District failed to properly maintain the Truckee Canal and is liable for damages suffered by hundreds of Fernley residents during the 2008 flood.
“The jury’s verdict sends a strong message to irrigation districts that they must maintain their project works, especially in areas of increased urbanization,” Patrick Leverty, a lawyer for the victims, said in a statement. “This verdict shows that justice has been done.”
